National data reports that the average college student makes $14,000.00 a year. Due to significant financial constraints like these many UIC students are going to class hungry. Students report that they are stressed and anxious by the chronic experience of being hungry.
We are the Wellness Center and we feed students through our UIC Pop-Up Pantry. Last academic year we gave away almost 6,000 bags of food. It’s only because of donations from students, staff, and faculty that we were able to achieve this goal.
This fall we would ask you to activate your power and walk for UIC students dealing with food insecurity
Join us Saturday, September 7, 2019, Pack the Pantry, by doing a 2-mile fun walk that helps to feed students dealing with food insecurity
How does this help?
The UIC Pop-up Pantry is given $12.00 by the Greater Chicago Food Depository for every individual who walks on behalf of the Pantry.
What are the details?
Event: Greater Chicago Food Depository 34th annual Hunger Walk
Date: Saturday, September 7th from 8:30 am- 11:30 am
Location: Jackson Park (south of the Museum of Science and Industry and across from Lake Michigan)
Distance: 2.5 Miles
What do you receive?
· Free event t-shirt
· Checkered racing flag
· Red UIC baseball cap (supplies limited)
· And a warm fuzzy feeling!
(You do NOT have to be UIC affiliated to register)
So bring your colleagues, friends, family, and or roommates to earn their steps and help us “Pack the Pantry!”
In order for us to receive credit, you must register by Tuesday, August 27th and you must walk. Please be aware that if you register and then do not walk we are charged a $5.00 fee. Yikes!
Follow these steps to register:
1. Follow the link: https://www.classy.org/event/34th-annual-hunger-walk-member-agencies/e235598
2. Click the green “Register” button in the middle of the page
2. Click the left circle, “Join a team”.
3. In the search bar, type in UIC Pop Up Pantry, it will generate and you will see “UIC Pop Up Pantry A01542”
4. Click the white box with our team name
5. Add a ticket to your cart. (You will NOT be charged)
6. Click the green “Register” button
6. Fill out the form. And then click the green “next” button on the right-hand side.
8. Fill out the information requested, you will NOT be charged. Then click the green “Purchase” button.
9. You should receive an email that says “Success! Your registration was successful!” You will receive an email confirmation.
10. Keep a lookout for a future email from us regarding T-shirt and Bib pickup
